IAPETUS PhD project: Finding and protecting Scotland’s hidden groundwater-dependent ecosystems
Funding: NERC IAPETUS doctoral training partnership studentship (competitive), studentship ID IAP-26-044
Lead institution: University of Glasgow, School of Geographical and Earth Sciences
Supervisors: Dr Xander Huggins (University of Glasgow), Donald John MacAllister and Sarah Collins (British Geological Survey)
This PhD will produce the first comprehensive map of groundwater-dependent ecosystems in Scotland, and improve methods to detect them in humid, energy-limited landscapes. It will map the groundwatersheds of these ecosystems to assess cumulative risks from land use, contamination, warming, and drought, and examine how the ecosystems may change under future land use, water use, and climate scenarios. The project includes training and placement time at the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh.
