ExaGEO PhD project: From roots to rainfall: modelling climate interactions and vulnerability of groundwater-dependent ecosystems

Funding: NERC ExaGEO Doctoral Landscape Award studentship (competitive)
Project institution: University of Glasgow
Supervisors: Dr Xander Huggins (University of Glasgow, principal supervisor), Dr Wenxin Zhang (University of Glasgow), Dr Nick A Chappell (Lancaster University), and Dr Dave McKay (University of Edinburgh)

This PhD will study how groundwater-dependent ecosystems in drylands connect groundwater, vegetation, and the atmosphere. It will use GPU-accelerated modelling and atmospheric moisture tracking to test how these ecosystems respond to falling groundwater, and which of them contribute most to regional rainfall and to ecosystems downwind.

ExaGEO trains PhD students in GPU-accelerated environmental modelling, large-scale Earth observation analysis, and Earth system applications.

how to apply

The full project description is on the ExaGEO project page. Apply through the ExaGEO programme, which lists the deadlines. Applicants to ExaGEO apply for three projects.

I am happy to talk with interested applicants before they apply. Contact me at xander [dot] huggins [at] glasgow [dot] ac [dot] uk.
